Call Harrisburg NOW to Help Reform Statue of Limitation Laws In Child Sex Crime Cases

The follow message is from Tammy Lerner, Vice President of the Foundation to Abolish Child Sex Abuse.  My own familiarity with these Bills comes from a panel hosted at the Allentown Brew Works last year as part of the Beerituality series in  which Tammy and columnist Bill White were particpants.  My reflections on that experience and on these Bills can be found here:  http://chriscocca.com/2011/11/18/beerituality-panelists-discuss-the-penn-state-scandal-and-wider-concerns/

Now, on to the message from Tammy:

Hello Friends, Advocates, Survivors and Supporters of Survivors,

THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE CONTACTED US ASKING HOW TO HELP, NOW IS THE TIME!

We have been waiting for 15 months for these critically needed bills to be moved out of the PA House Judiciary Committee.  Finally, after intense pressure from our group and others, coupled with heightened media coverage of the need for statute of limitations reform for child sex crimes, finally there will be a vote tomorrow.

THIS MORNING CHAIRMAN RON MARSICO WILL BRING OUR BILLS (HB878 AND HB832, Statutes of Limitations Civil Window and Abolishment of Criminal SOLs) TO A VOTE IN HIS COMMITTEE.

WE NEED EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU TO CALL ALL MEMBERS OF THE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, AS WELL AS FLOODING THEM WITH EMAILS.  WE ALSO NEED AS MANY BODIES AS POSSIBLE IN HARRISBURG BY 11:30AM TOMORROW TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR THESE BILLS….TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR VICTIMS AND CHILDREN.

For years we have worked tirelessly to get to this point.  Let’s give it our all.  Let’s show the state and the nation that PA can be and should be the model for an overhaul of antiquated SOL laws.

PLEASE MAKE A CONCERTED EFFORT TO PASS THIS EMAIL ALONG TO EVERY PERSON YOU KNOW
(AND MAYBE EVEN TO THOSE YOU DON’T KNOW)

Apologies for the last minute plea, but that is the nature of politics.  Feel free to email or call me with questions.

Thanks so much for all of your caring, compassion and dedication to finding justice for victims and for helping to protect children.

All the very best,
Tammy

SAMPLE MESSAGE:

Dear Representative:

Many child abuse victims, supporters and all who care about children are asking you to consider and support HB 878 and HB 832 without amendments, which would address our outdated statute of limitations laws. Despite the outrage over the Sandusky trial and the Philadelphia Archdiocese proceedings, these bills are stuck in your committee. Attached please find a recent editorial from the Harrisburg Patriot News that makes a strong case for immediate action.
These bills are being considered by your committee today.
Now is your chance to stand up for children – and not for those who continue to protect special interests. Make no mistake: this procedural vote will clearly define who is on the side of victims and who continues to protect predators. We are asking for your leadership on this critical issue and we will take note of this critical vote.
Please vote to move HB 878 and HB 832 forward.

Pennsylvania’s children can’t wait for task forces. They can’t wait one more day!
